The Clinton White House's director of administration, David Watkins, is forced to resign, after a Maryland newspaper reported that Watkins and two other Clinton Administration officials had used the President's helicopter, Marine One, for transportation on a golf outing.
According to an estimate by the Marine Corps, the cost of the helicopter trip would have amounted to $4,760.
After the golf outing was reported by the Frederick News-Post, the White House initially defended the trip, calling it "a very appropriate mission," and claimed that the officials were scouting the course for a future outing by the President.
Announcing the resignation, however, the White House press secretary admitted that the trip had nothing to do with any planned trip by President Clinton.
