President Bill Clinton is impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives, only the second U.S. President (Andrew Johnson was the first) to be censured as such. Of four articles of impeachment relating to the President's testimony regarding his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, two passed, and two were rejected.
The first article of impeachment passed, alleging that President Clinton committed perjury during a grand jury investigation of his earlier testimony.
The second article was rejected by the House. It alleged that the President perjured himself in a deposition in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case.
The third article passed, alleging obstruction of justice by the President for attempting to influence Ms. Lewinsky and the President's secretary, Betty Currie, to lie under oath to the grand jury.
The fourth article failed to pass. It alleged that President Clinton abused the office of the Presidency by providing false written statements to congressional investigators.
