Who do I Please, MoveOn.org or the American People?

May 2007- The Guardian (British newspaper) reports on the dilemma faced by Sen. Hillary Clinton on the vote to continue funding for American troops in Iraq through September.  Despite currently opposing the war, most Democrats supported the funding, fearing repercussions from the broad electorate if they were seen to be denying support to troops in a battle zone.  On the other hand, the most strident war opponents are a large voting bloc among the Democratic primary voters Sen. Clinton is courting in her run for the presidency, and they would not be pleased if she were to show any compromise on the issue.

In the end, Sen. Clinton went against most in her party and most in the Senate, voting AGANST funding American troops, a bill that passed with a bi-partisan 86-14 majority.

I Used to be AGAINST Timetables for Withdrawal from Iraq...

"The White House press corps grills the Clinton Administration's Communications Director, George Stephanopoulos over what The New York Times says "may have been the most expensive haircut in history."

The previous day, Beverly Hills hairstylist Cristophe had been brought aboard Air Force One, which was parked with all engines running at LA International Airport.  It was later disclosed that Cristophe's bill totaled $200 for the President’s trim.

Standard security rules regarding Air Force One required two of the four runways at LAX to be shut down for nearly an hour, with some incoming commuter flights required to circle indefinitely

"Everybody has to get their hair cut," Mr. Stephanopoulos explained.

Seven longtime employees of the White House travel office are fired and replaced by friends & relatives of Bill and Hillary Clinton.  White House spokesmen alleged that the firings were due to a criminal level of financial mismanagement, a charge that was later found to be untrue.

First Lady Hillary Clinton portrayed her involvement as minimal, and denied any role in the firing decision.  She claimed that she had merely expressed concern to White House staff about the operations of the travel office.

In contrast, a memo written by David Watkins, the White House aid that carried out the firings stated, "we both knew there would be hell to pay'' if ''we failed to take swift and decisive action in conformity with the First Lady's wishes."  Another memo by Watkins quoted Hillary Clinton having said "We need those people out and we need our people in.''

In interviews with the General Accounting Office, which was investigating the scandal, the First Lady claimed to have no memory of the details of her discussions with Watkins.

May 1993- The American Medical Association responds to First Lady Hillary Clinton’s accusation that "too many people have made too much money" in the providing of health care and health insurance.

"Her populist purple prose will play well to those who do not understand the issues. But it's very disappointing to those of us who have to care for individual patients and diseases on a daily basis"   -Dr. Raymond Scalettar, chairman of the American Medical Association

Now I'm FOR Artificial Timetables for Withdrawal, But Maybe I'm Not...

In the morning, Sen. Hillary Clinton voted for a motion to allow the advancement of legislation cutting off funding for the Iraq war.

At noontime, Sen. Clinton refused to state whether she would vote for the bill when it would ultimately up for passage.

By the end of the day, Sen. Clinton stated that she had been in favor of passing the legislation all along.

When questioned about her take on the evolving nature of Sen. Clinton's position on the Iraq funding bill, Christy Setzer, campaign spokeswoman for Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT) stated "We're as confused as anyone on Senator Clinton's position. Frankly, it's hard to know whether it's indecision, miscommunication or simple word games and political gamesmanship we're dealing with. Our troops in Iraq don't have time for poll-tested word games"

WWHD? (What Would Hillary Drive?)

Hillary Clinton's response to a May 2007 Associated Press personality questionnaire described the car she drives:

"For security reasons, we drive in Secret Service vehicles but the Service lets us use a Ford hybrid when we're home in New York."

Hillary deserves an A+ for this answer on three points:

1) She drives American- good for the union vote;
2) It's a hybrid- good for the environmentalist vote;

3) She knows it's a Ford, but doesn't know what model- makes her appear more feminine and softens her image.

During a commencement address at Long Island University, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said she had apologized to her daughter for comments demeaning the work ethic of today's youth.

After hearing about the comments , the Senator's daughter, Chelsea had called to complain. "She called and she said, 'Mom, I do work hard and my friends work hard,"' Clinton said.

Clinton's comment that "Kids, for whatever reason, think they're entitled to go right to the top with $50,000 or $75,000 jobs when they have not done anything to earn their way up" in particular would have hit home with Chelsea, who was hired by McKinsey & Co. fresh out of grad school, reportedly earning a six-figure salary for her first job.

"I said, 'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to convey the impression that you don't work hard,'"

What Price Beauty?

May 1993- The New York Times reports that the hair and makeup charges for Hillary Clinton's cover photo for Family Circle Magazine amounted to $2,000.  The White House flew Cristophe of Beverly Hills and a makeup artist from Los Angeles to Washington to "coif and colorize" Hillary Rodham Clinton for magazine cover photographs.

For the warm and friendly photograph of Mrs. Clinton that adorned the cover of the May issue of Family Circle, the magazine paid all of these charges, said Jacqueline Leo, the editor in chief of Family Circle.

"A lot of kids don't know what work is. They think work is a four-letter word.  We've got to send a different message to our young people. America didn't happen by accident. A lot of people worked really hard. They've got to do their part, too."
