A Federal judge holds President Bill Clinton in contempt of court for false testimony given during his deposition in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case.
Judge Susan Webber Wright, in her ruling, said that the President had provided false testimony in a deposition when he said that he had not had sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky. The Judge also said that Clinton's actions had subverted the rule of law, and violated Ms. Jones' right to information relevant to her case.
In fining the President $1,202 (the Judge's travel costs to attend the deposition), the Judge noted that it was the first time in history that a President had ever been held in contempt of court
"The record demonstrates by clear and convincing evidence that the President responded to plaintiff's questions by giving false, misleading and evasive answers that were designed to obstruct the judicial process."
